- In Costa Rica, many of the public schools do not teach students to read until they are in second grade or so.
- The public schools do not teach students that there are seven continents. They teach them five: Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa, and the Americas [combining North America and South America and completely cutting out Antarctica].

I've modified the World Book's for the different classes I will be teaching based on their levels of understanding English, reading abilities, and writing abilities. For one, I have more fill-in-the-blank sentences and a word bank. For another, I have only included lines for the students to form and write their own sentences. After I have given a brief lesson on the continents, the oceans, and, in some cases, different countries, I am going into teaching a bit about different cultures on the different continents. To do this, I have some pretty neat arts & crafts activities prepared that I am super excited about! On Wednesday, the same class I had this morning will be making Australian dot paintings, Chinese lanterns, Egyptian pyramids, Venetian gondolas, and Native American dream catchers (I know, I am combining the Americas and cutting out Antarctica...but it's for the sake of time--I promise!).
I hope each class will go as smoothly as the one today did, and I hope I make a connection with the other students at the Center just as easily as I did with Nathaly and Pamela. Although I know each class will be different, I hope they will still each have the same results--a better understanding of the English language, the continents, and other cultures.
